Amalgam Price Data
Exoto Price Data
There are tons of different scale model car brands, ranging from Hot Wheels all the way to CMC and even higher, like Amalgam. Arguably, Amalgam and Exoto are some of the highest-end models out there. But what about brands like BBR? If we’re sticking to the best of the best, surely they should be included. While you’re absolutely right, the BBR second-hand market is a bit... disorganized to say the least.
So, not only are Exoto and Amalgam probably the closest things to 'investment-grade' diecast brands, they’re also relatively easy to track.
Now, onto the method. DiecastData.net takes snapshots of secondary market prices for both Amalgam and Exoto brands (currently only from eBay) and calculates the average price.
Why the average? Why not track every single model? Why not assess which characteristics are likely to bring about better returns? Well, it’s mostly because no one knows the future. All things being equal, we can keep an eye on average ‘returns’ using this simple metric. As for which characteristics will perform well, it’s never been more complicated than factors like being iconic, rare, and in mint condition.
As for why this site even exists, it’s because we want to figure out what the historical return of these diecast brands might be. Take, for example, Lego. Here’s an interesting paper that suggests Lego (not specific to any models in the paper) has returned 11% per annum: LEGO: The Toy of Smart Investors.
Not bad, if you ask me! But surely, toy cars can do just as well. So, we’re here to find out!
